PRESS RELEASE FOR TSUNAMI SURF RELIEF DAY 9th APRIL 2005 @CROYDE

The Tsunami Surf Relief Fun Day held at Baggy Lodge, Croyde Bay on Saturday 9th April raised over £1100 for the Tsunami victims in Sri Lanka.

The all day event was held against the beautiful views of Croyde Bay and included a barbeque, cream teas, an internet café and an auction of many surf related items.  Contributions were received from companies such as Genesis Surf, Maniac Films, Tiki, SaltRock, Hunter, Second Skin, SurfedOut, Redwood, PointBreaks, and the Little Pink Shop (Croyde Bay Surfing).

Whilst the cold North wind did its worst, the sun and fun prevailed.  Visitors enjoyed the sun, the view, the live music and the good humour of the day.  The music was provided by Erin Starnes, Becky Loney and Dave Little, with Mark Brindle of Maniac Films taking care of the sound production.  Dave and Becky will be launching their “Small Town Mentality” album on the 22nd April in the Landmark, Illfracombe

The occasion was part of a national fund raising event sponsored by the Tsunami Surf Relief organisation, consisting of Christian Surfers, the British Surf Association, the British Professional Surf Association and many in the surf industry.  The Croyde event was supported by the local Surfers Against Suffering group established to help relieve suffering in the world.

The money raised, along with some £15,000 or so raised nationally on Saturday, will be taken directly to the Arugam Bay region of Sri Lanka (south East Coast) that has seen little support to date from the larger charity organisations.  Over 900 of the 3000 population there died in the disaster and most homes and businesses were lost to the sea.

The Tsunami Surf Relief team have already visited the area and established a committee (including local Sri Lankan officials) to review and prioritise support and building needs.  Supporters will then travel to the region (at their own expense) to help implement the building works and other support required – many UK tradesmen and women, teachers, nurses and doctors will be assisting from all around the UK.

The Tsunami Surf Relief Team and Surfers Against Suffering would like to thank all of their supporters and those who contributed to this event.
